Coned Bras and The Monkey House – A Must Read!

by LEANNE

Some of my favorite images from the past are those of women wearing the coned bra.  I often wonder how that trend came to be and how in the world Madonna nearly brought it back in the 80’s.  I’d have to think that its prevalence arose from a lack of options in the beginning.  And then, after everyone had looked at this pointy silhouette long enough, it didn’t seem so weird.  This reminds me of one of my favorite fashion quotes from the ever-stylish, Tim Gunn. If you’re a Project Runway or Tim Gunn fan, how could you ever forget about “the monkey house?”  The women who found it necessary to tent their breasts were definitely “living in the monkey house!”

So what does all of this have to do with maternity?  Well, not that long ago, much like the women of the 50’s who chose the coned bra, pregnant and nursing women didn’t have many choices.  Finding bras that didn’t look matronly and simply unsexy was a difficult task.  If you wanted a functional and comfortable bra for pregnancy or nursing, you were forced to live in the monkey house and in a bad bra nonetheless.  Fortunately now, many options exist, and at Baby Bump Maternity, we carry a wide array of bras that grow with you during pregnancy and have all the hardware for nursing, too.
